The Kalyan Bazarpeth police arrested a 25-year-old man for allegedly possessing over 12 kg of ganja intended for sale in the city on Friday. The accused has been identified as Shakil Shaikh, 25, a resident of Beed district in Maharashtra.
The police said that the patrolling team was on duty and Police Constable Prahalad Chaudhary received information about a man who was about to come to the city intending to sell ganja. Chaudhary informed senior officials about it. A team was formed and set up at Govindwadi area in Kalyan. The accused, Shaikh, was roaming in and around the location.
They detained him and discovered over 12 kg of ganja in his possession. An FIR has been registered against him under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. The police said that Shaikh was presented in court and remanded into police custody for further investigation.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Kalyan Ghete from Kalyan Division said, "We have a blockade in Kalyan city on account of the Holi festival. Meanwhile, based on a tip-off, we laid a trap and arrested the accused. During the investigation, we learned that he had procured ganja from Beed and brought it to Kalyan to sell to someone. We are trying to get the name of the recipient of the ganja. Furthermore, the investigation is underway."
