Sonipat: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Surendra Jawahra was allegedly shot dead by his neighbour in a land dispute at around 9.30 pm on Friday in Haryana’s Sonipat, police said. Jawahar was the president of BJP's Mundlana Mandal in Sonipat. The unknown assailant allegedly opened fire on Jawahar on Friday night in Jawahra village.

The entire incident was caught on CCTV and its video surfaced online. In the footage, it could be seen that Jawahra entered a shop with the assailant in hot pursuit. Before getting shot, the BJP leader was shouting, “mujhe maar diya (I am hit). The accused shot Jawahra in the head. The BJP leader died on the spot. After the incident, some people took away the accused.

“We received information yesterday that there had been firing in Jawahra village and 'nambardar' (village headman) Surendra, had been shot. FIR has been registered and three teams have been formed... The accused will be arrested soon... The reason behind the death is a land dispute with a neighbour,” ACP Crime Rishikant told ANI.

Police Official's Statement:

The BJP leader’s neighbour reportedly fired three bullets at him. The police have not disclosed the identity of the accused. The accused was furious at the BJP leader over a land dispute. The land was purchased by Jawahra purchased in the name of the suspect’s aunt, reported India Today.

On Friday, the accused had reportedly warned the BJP leader not to step on the land. However, the BJP leader arrived at the site to clear the land. He was then confronted by the assailant and the matter escalated.
