Tokyo, Japan: Two Japanese tourists, a male and a female in their 20s were detained for two weeks in China for clicking pictures showing exposed buttocks at the Great Wall, according to AFP. The tourists were taken into custody on the spot by security personnel. The man reportedly showed his bottom and the woman who accompanied him clicked pictures.

Tokyo's foreign ministry on Friday confirmed that "the Embassy of Japan in China confirmed on January 3 that two Japanese nationals were detained by local authorities at the Great Wall."

They "were subsequently released and returned to Japan during January", the ministry said in a statement.

Reportedly, exposing the lower half of the body in a public place is illegal in China.The tourists informed the Japanese embassy that the act was a prank.

According to UNESCO, The Great Wall was continuously built from the 3rd century BC to the 17th century AD on the northern border of the country as the great military defence project of successive Chinese Empires, with a total length of more than 20,000 kilometers.

The Great Wall of China starts from the east at Shanhaiguan in Hebei province and ends at Jiayuguan in Gansu province to the west. Notably, UNESCO has designated the Great Wall a World Heritage site and around 10 million tourists visit The Great Wall Of China every year.
