Haryana: The results for the Haryana Municipal Corporation elections, covering multiple districts like Gurugram, Sirsa, Jhajjar, and Karnal, will be announced on Wednesday, March 12. The counting of votes, which began at 8:00 AM today, is currently underway for the elections held on March 2.
As per early trends, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to secure its victory in the state, while the Congress is likely to face its second successive defeat.
These polls were conducted to elect Mayors and Ward Members for seven Municipal Corporations, as well as presidents and ward members for four Municipal Councils and 21 Municipal Committees.
Additionally, by-elections were held for three municipal president positions—Sohna (Gurugram), Assandh (Karnal), and Ismailabad (Kurukshetra).
Voter turnout stood at 41% across all municipal bodies. Notably, Panipat held its mayoral elections separately on March 9.
BJP Likely to Secure Victory In State
According to reports, the BJP is set for a sweeping victory in Haryana’s municipal elections, leading in nine of ten mayoral races, including Congress stronghold Rohtak. In Manesar, BJP rebel Dr Inderjit Yadav is ahead as an independent.
The BJP deployed top leaders like Rajasthan CM Nayab Saini and Delhi CM Rekha Gupta, conducting door-to-door campaigns and roadshows. Congress countered with Sachin Pilot and Bhupinder Hooda but faced a tough contest.
In Gurugram, BJP's Raj Rani leads Congress's Pahuja by over 95,000 votes after six rounds of counting.
Congress Faces Setback In Rohtak
Rohtak’s mayoral race featured a five-way contest, but BJP's Ram Avtar won decisively with over one lakh votes. Congress's Surajmal Kiloi trailed by more than 45,000 votes.
The defeat is a major blow to Congress, as Rohtak is the stronghold of former CM Bhupinder Hooda.
BJP Wins Ambala, Leads In Key Cities
The BJP’s Shailja Sachdeva won Ambala’s mayoral race, defeating Congress’ Amisha Chawla by 20,487 votes. In Faridabad, BJP’s Parveen Joshi led against Congress’ Lata Rani.
BJP candidates maintained leads across major cities—Praveen Popli in Hisar, Renu Bala Gupta in Karnal, and Komal Saini in Panipat—defeating Congress rivals. BJP’s Rajiv Jain led in Sonipat, while Suman was ahead in Yamunanagar.
Lower Voter Turnout, Unopposed Victories
Voting was held on March 2 in most cities, with Panipat polling on March 9. Voter turnout hit a record low of 41%, significantly below the 68% seen in the Assembly elections.
Meanwhile, 26 ward members were elected unopposed, including candidates from Faridabad, Gurugram, Karnal, and Yamunanagar.
