Indore (Madhya Pradesh): To promote good health practices among students and faculty, the International Institute of Professional Studies (IIPS) organised a health awareness conference. The programme featured prominent doctors who addressed key health concerns, preventive measures and common myths.
Head and neck onco surgeon Dr Apurva Garg warned about the dangers of tobacco, calling it a major cause of cancer. She explained that tobacco doesn’t just affect the lungs but can harm the body from head to toe. Supari and alcohol are equally harmful, with alcohol categorised as a group-1 carcinogen.
Despite the ban on e-cigarettes and vaping in India, their use is still prevalent among youth. Dr Garg highlighted that one hour of hookah smoking equals smoking 100 cigarettes, making it extremely hazardous. He stressed that poor oral hygiene can also lead to bacterial infections and advised visiting a dentist every six months. Dr Garg expressed concern over the rising number of women smokers, which has increased lung cancer cases among females. She emphasised that nicotine is the primary addictive substance in cigarettes, warning that tobacco does not reduce stress or improve concentration.
Dr Vipin Sharma, a uro surgeon, discussed kidney and bladder health, warning that frequent night-time urination, foul-smelling urine, or difficulty emptying the bladder could indicate serious issues. Smoking is a major cause of bladder cancer, while dehydration and lack of exercise contribute to kidney stones.
Nephrologist Dr Isha Arora debunked the popular “detox drink” trend, explaining that only the kidneys and liver naturally detoxify the body. She warned that kidney diseases often remain unnoticed until severe damage occurs, stressing the need for regular checkups. She recommended calculating daily water intake by multiplying body weight (in kg) by 0.03.
Plastic surgeon Dr Prachir Mukati spoke about the importance of self-worth over beauty standards, encouraging emotional well-being. Orthopedic surgeon Dr Pulkit Bandi advised proper warm-ups, stretching and posture to prevent sports injuries. The event was coordinated by Prof Geeta Nema and was attended by senior teachers including Prof B.K. Tripathi etc.
