Panipat: A wedding in Panipat, Haryana, meant to be a joyous occasion, descended into chaos as a heated dispute erupted between the bride and groom's families. The conflict erupted over a lehenga and allegedly fake jewellery escalating to the point where one party reportedly brandished a sword. The escalating tensions ultimately led to the wedding being called off.

The dramatic turn of events unfolded on February 23, when the groom's family from Amritsar arrived with the baraat. However, the bride's family was displeased with the lehenga chosen by the groom's side and insisted she wear the one they had purchased for Rs 40,000 from Chandni Chowk.

The disagreement quickly spiralled into a full-blown altercation, forcing police to intervene and restore order.

What did the groom's family allege?

In an interview with ETV Bharat, the groom's brother said, "We gave them Rs 10,000 to book the wedding hall. They first demanded a lehenga worth Rs 20,000 and then chose an even costlier one. We had just built a new house for which we had to take a loan so we brought whatever (lehenga) we could afford."

He added that the bride's family "kept pressuring them" to prepone the wedding, alleging that her grandmother also demanded five gold ornaments and a lehenga from Chandni Chowk. "We bought the lehenga but she (grandmother) claimed it was old. We even hired a car for Rs 35,000 to travel to and fro," he further told the publication.

Bride's family's allegations

The bride's mother, a widow supporting her family through manual labour, revealed that she had arranged her younger daughter's wedding for October 25, 2024, in Amritsar. Hoping to marry off both daughters around the same time, she agreed to fix her elder daughter's wedding for February 23. However, tensions arose soon after the match was finalised, as the groom’s family allegedly pressured them to hurry the wedding.

As per the report, the bride's family was shocked when the groom's side arrived with an old lehenga and artificial jewellery on the wedding day. To their dismay, they hadn't even brought garlands, citing it as "not part of their tradition." When questioned, the groom's family allegedly became aggressive, leading to a brawl where one person reportedly brandished a sword.

The bride's mother further claimed that she had paid Rs 13,000 in advance for a lehenga from Chandni Chowk, yet the groom's family falsely accused them of demanding Rs 1 lakh. Frustrated, she questioned how her daughter could have a secure future with such a family.

Police officials confirmed the wedding was cancelled and stated that the matter would be handed over to the concerned police station for further resolution.
