Mumbai: Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave warning for Mumbai and Mumbai Metropolitan Region for February 25 and 26. The warning was issued after the city recorded the maximum temperature above 37 degrees Celsius consistently for three to four days.

On Tuesday, Mumbai recorded a maximum temperature of 38.7 degrees Celsius, a 5.9 degrees above normal and highest of the season so far. It also marked second highest February temperature the city recorded since 2017.

"The heatwave warning has been issued for the districts of Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar. The maximum temperature is these regions will range between 37 and 39 degree Celsius for the next 48 hours. Citizens are requested to drink sufficient water and avoid prolonged exposure to the heat," IMD Mumbai officer Sushma Nair said.

The mercury is expected slightly drop after 48 hours, however, the hot and humid weather conditions will continue. Nair added that heatwave warnings are issued when a city records above normal temperature of minimum 4.5 degrees Celsius and a maximum mercury above 37 degrees Celsius at atleast two weather stations. The conditions met on Tuesday, and considering the winds pattern a heatwave warning was issued for two days.

As per IMD bulletin, a 'Yellow' warning has been issued till Saturday March 1 for Konkan region, which includes districts of Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. Under the warning, an alert for heatwave is given for February 26 for the entire region except Sindhudurg. While, the Yellow warning which also gives alert for very hot and humid conditions, has been issued till February 27 for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad.

The IMD has also issued advisories for the heatwave. It has advised citizens to avoid prolonged heat exposure, stay hydrated, use loose cotton clothes and in case signs of heat stroke, approach the nearby doctor/hospital immediately.

Mumbaikars saw start of the year with above normal temperatures. January 2025 too was the third hottest January Mumbai witnessed. "The overall temperature in February too has been above normal. The month has been hot than usual. The trend of above normal temperature is global. However, the heatwave will continue only till February 26, after which city will witness maximum temperature around 35 to 36 degrees Celsius," said IMD Mumbai Director Sunil Kamble.
