Taking a significant step toward public health protection, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) will roll out a Japanese Encephalitis (JE) vaccination drive from March 1. This initiative aims to safeguard children from the life-threatening viral disease, which primarily affects those under 15 years of age.

JE is a serious neurological infection that can lead to severe complications, including permanent disability and even death. With a mortality rate of around 30% and long-term neurological impairment in 30-40% of survivors, JE remains a major public health concern. PCMC’s health department urges parents and schools to actively participate in the campaign to ensure maximum coverage and protection.

The campaign will be implemented across Pimpri-Chinchwad from March 1

Children aged 1 to 15 years will receive free JE vaccinations at schools and community centres.

The vaccine is part of the National Immunisation Programme and has been proven safe and effective in preventing JE.

Call for cooperation from schools and parents

On February 24, PCMC’s health department conducted a preparatory meeting, emphasising the crucial role of schools and parents in the success of this initiative. Officials stressed the importance of educating students about JE vaccination, organising awareness sessions for parents and ensuring smooth execution of vaccination sessions in schools.

The meeting was convened under the guidance of PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh and Additional Commissioner Vijay Khorate, with PCMC Medical Officer of Health Dr Laxman Gophane, Additional Medical Officer of Health Dr Abhayachandra Dadewar, and key education and health officials in attendance. The discussion covered logistical arrangements, record-keeping of vaccinated students, and coordination between schools and the health department.
