Washington DC: French President Emmanuel Macton on Monday met his United States counterpart, Donald Trump. During the meeting, Macron interrupted and fact-checked Trump on his claims on Ukrraine aid. The video of the incident is doing rounds on social media.

During a press conference, Trump claimed that Europe was giving aid to Ukraine to fight against Russia as a loan. "Europe is loaning the money to Ukraine. They get their money back," the US President said.

Macron immediately interrupted Trump. The French President responded, "No, in fact to be to be frank We paid we paid 60% of the total defaults and it was Like the US loans guarantee grants and we provided the real money to be clear."

“We have 230 billion frozen assets in Europe Russian assets, but this is not as collateral of a loan because this is not our belonging. Responding to Macron’s remarks, Trump stated, “ if you believe that it's okay with me.”

Macron was the first European leader to meet Trump since he returned to the White House on January 20.

After the meeting, Macron said US President Donald Trump and he made "substantive steps forward" during their meeting on Monday (local time). He emphasised their desire to build peace. However, the French president ruled out the possibility of Ukraine's surrender.

"This peace must not mean a surrender of Ukraine. It must not mean a ceasefire without guarantees. This peace must allow for Ukrainian sovereignty and allow Ukraine to negotiate with other stakeholders," Macron said at a joint news conference with Trump at the White House, as per CNN.

Macron met Trump on the third anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine war.
