Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Monday that he approved 109 out of 125 names proposed by cabinet ministers for the roles of Private Secretary (PS) and Officer on Special Duty (OSD). He rejected the remaining candidates due to ongoing inquiries or their reputations as 'fixers'.

However, the selection process has caused discontent among some ministers from the Mahayuti alliance. NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) leader and Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate expressed frustration at an event, stating that even the appointment of their PS and OSD was controlled by the Chief Minister, sparking controversy.

“He (Fadnavis) stated that any minister who attempts to deviate from the government's plan risks losing their position. There is nothing left in our hands. We will have to perform now,” Kokate said.

His statement sparked discussions in political circles. In response, Fadnavis made it clear that the authority to appoint a minister’s PS and OSD rests solely with the Chief Minister.

Speaking further on the matter, Fadnavis clarified that this is not a new practice. He stated, “Ministers send proposals to the CM, who makes the final decision.” Fadnavis further added, “I had clearly stated in the Cabinet meeting that ministers can submit the names they prefer. However, if any of those names are associated with fixing or questionable activities, I will not approve them.”

He emphasised that even if some individuals were unhappy with this decision, he would not give approval to those with questionable backgrounds.

Kokate revealed that the CM had set strict expectations from day one, making it clear that the departure of any minister, including himself, would not affect the government. He emphasised that if anyone tried to act out of line, they would be shown the door, as maintaining discipline in departmental work was a priority.
