Mumbai: Two accused were arrested in Ahmedabad on February 19 for stealing jewellery from multiple women in Thane and Mumbai, an official said on Sunday.

The suspects came to light when the police investigated the theft of a 60-year-old woman's jewellery in the Bhayander area on February 4.

The woman was travelling home from Bhayander railway station when the accused met her midway, engaged her in a conversation, and allegedly stole her jewellery, valued at Rs 80,000, after diverting her attention, Senior Police Inspector Aviraj Kurhade said, as per media agency PTI.

An FIR was subsequently registered by the Navghar police against unidentified persons under relevant Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections.

After reviewing CCTV footage and following several areas, including technical and intelligence information, the police received a tip that the suspects were from Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

The two accused men, aged 23 and 45, were arrested on February 19 from the Sardar Nagar area in Ahmedabad with the help of Gujarat police. During interrogation, it was revealed that they were involved in 10 other similar theft cases at several police stations in Thane and Mumbai. The police are working to recover the stolen valuables from the accused.

Gold Hidden in Plane Lavatory

A 24-year-old man from Karnataka, Inaamul Hassan, was arrested by the Customs Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) on suspicion of smuggling gold worth Rs 2.1 crore from the Maldives. Reports indicate that the gold was hidden in the aircraft's lavatory.

Customs sources stated that intelligence was received on Tuesday regarding Hassan, a passenger on a flight from Male to Mumbai, who had concealed illegal gold on board. AIU officers conducted a search of the aircraft and discovered 13 gold pouches hidden within the light panel of the lavatory. Hassan was apprehended in the arrival hall.
