The  crematorium in Kharghar, Sector-14, run by the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC), has come under scrutiny for charging families for essential materials required for the final rites of the deceased. The alleged system followed by the administration is stated to add to the  financial strain on grieving families and has drawn sharp criticism from residents and activists.

According to community members, the crematorium is not only imposing charges for last rites essentials but also levying fees for gas pipeline cremation services." corporation needs to have serious re-thinking of levying fees for service of final rites from a grieving family," said a resident.

Additionally, the crematorium is stated to be lacking basic amenities, including proper seating for relatives, clean drinking water, and functional toilets, making the final rites process even more distressing for mourners.

Local activist Jayesh Gogari, a member of Bharat Raksha Manch (Konkan Region), has issued a 20-day ultimatum to PMC, demanding Free provision of all essential materials and services required for last rites at the crematorium and Improved facilities, including proper seating arrangements, clean drinking water, and well-maintained toilets for attendees.

In a letter addressed to the Panvel Municipal Corporation, the activist has warned that if these demands are not fulfilled within 20 days, he will launch an indefinite hunger strike starting March 23, 2025, against the municipal body.

When contacted officials affirmed about the charges but termed it is done to get residents to opt for gas cremation  instead of the conventional wood based rituals. " The wood based cremation costs 2500 whereas gas based cremation is charged at Rs 100.  This is done so that families opt for  eco friendly ways of  cremation," said the official.
