In connection with the impending eviction of 6,500 residents in the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) region before the demolition of their homes, some affected residents traveled to Mumbai to seek assistance from MP Dr. Shrikant Shinde, son of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. They shared their distress over the prospect of becoming homeless within days.
KDMC officials stated that the High Court had issued a demolition order on November 19, 2024. Some residents challenged the order in court, arguing that they had been deceived by the builder. The court granted a stay until February 3, 2025, allowing them time to regularize their structures. However, KDMC rejected their applications due to violations related to Floor Space Index (FSI), margins, and other regulations. Subsequently, KDMC issued eviction notices ahead of the planned demolitions.
Speaking to the media, Shrikant Shinde stated that when the residents purchased their flats, the properties were presented as legal, with supporting documents from RERA and KDMC. He noted that even banks had sanctioned loans for these flats. "We will engage a legal team on behalf of the residents to fight the case in court," he assured.
Shinde further stated that Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has assured residents of government support, while Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde is working on a policy to safeguard affected homeowners. He emphasized that the Mahayuti government stands firmly with the people but stressed that action must be taken against builders and developers who misled buyers with fraudulent documents. "Our legal team will present suppressed facts before the court in a new approach," he added.
Shinde also urged political parties not to politicize the issue, emphasizing that the priority is to prevent residents from becoming homeless. "Our party will continue to support the residents until they receive relief," he asserted.
According to KDMC officials, 65 builders allegedly obtained MahaRERA certificates for their projects using forged documents. Thane’s Special Investigating Team (SIT) is currently probing the scam. The High Court had granted residents three months to take corrective measures, but the deadline expired on February 3, prompting KDMC to move forward with demolitions. Among the affected buildings, residents of Sai Galaxy had filed a petition before the HC, which was dismissed on February 13.
Meanwhile, Dipesh Mhatre, a leader from the Kalyan UBT faction, visited DCP Atul Zende's office in Kalyan to discuss the issue of 65 illegal buildings. He raised concerns about the continued registration of flats in these illegal structures. Mhatre claimed that several registrations had taken place in recent months despite the buildings being unauthorized and urged the DCP to conduct an inquiry into the alleged registration scam.
