Stand-up comedian and Bigg Boss 17 winner Munawar Faruqui has come out in support of comedian Samay Raina, who has been summoned by Mumbai Police, in connection with complaints filed against him and others over India's Got Latent controversy.
After celebrities like Uorfi Javed, Rakhi Sawant, Poonam Pandey, Aly Goni and Vivek Agnihotri, Munawar too has extended his support to Samay, stating that he will return stronger after severe backlash he has been facing since the last couple of days.
Taking to his Instagram story on Thursday (February 13), Munawar wrote, "Samay Art jo hai woh spring ki hai... Jitna dabaoge utnaa uper uthega... My G is going to come out so strong you will see (sic)."
It may be noted that in 2021, Munawar also faced the ire of netizens for his controversial jokes. He was arrested on January 1, 2021, before he could perform in Indore, for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through comments in his previous shows. Munawar had spent over a month in jail.
The Latent controversy
The controversy centers on a particular episode of Samay's India's Got Latent featuring YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, also known as Beer Biceps. During the episode, he posed a provocative question to a contestant, "Would you rather watch your parents have sex every day for the rest of your life or join in once to make it stop forever?"
This remark was met with widespread backlash, leading to allegations of promoting obscenity and vulgar content.
The incident prompted legal actions, with complaints filed against Ranveer, Samay, and other associated individuals. The National Commission for Women (NCW) summoned the involved parties, and the Assam Police registered a complaint against them, citing charges of promoting obscenity and engaging in sexually explicit and vulgar discussions.
Samay decided to remove all episodes of India's Got Latent from his YouTube channel, expressing his intent to cooperate fully with investigative agencies.
On February 13, he broke his silence on the matter and wrote on social media, "Everything that is happening has been too much for me to handle. I have removed all Indias Got Latent videos from my channel. My only objective was to make people laugh and have a good time. I will fully cooperate with all agencies to ensure their inquiries are concluded fairly. Thank you."
