As Valentine’s Day approaches, love is in the air—but now, it’s also on our screens. In today’s fast-paced world, technology has transformed modern romance, offering couples countless ways to connect, express love, and keep the spark alive. From heartfelt texts to AI-generated love notes and virtual dates, digital platforms have become an integral part of how partners maintain their bond, even from miles apart. Whether it’s sending spontaneous “I love you” messages via WhatsApp, creating personalised romantic reels with AI, or sharing memes that evoke shared laughter, technology is playing Cupid in new and unexpected ways.
From messages to memes
For many couples, digital platforms are not just a means of communication but a way to strengthen their bond through creative expressions of love. Some prefer the simplicity of sharing a daily “good morning” or “I love you” message, while others use AI-powered tools to create personalised digital love letters and custom-made videos that capture their unique relationship.
Robin Singh, Football commentator, sports analyst & digital content creator, shares how he and his wife, Lianne Texeira, embrace digital tools in their relationship, “Digital platforms help us stay connected over a call or a video call. Social media platforms let us share posts of our own and relatable content that we share with each other, be it future goals, love posts, or just a random funny video. Digital platforms are a way for us to let each other know that we’re always on our minds. I think it’s a mix of both for us—it helps us stay in touch and know about each other’s day whenever we’re apart, but sometimes a meme can make us laugh from miles away. Digital platforms also let us show & flaunt our love for everyone to see, which in itself is exciting. We’re old school that way, we don’t think AI will be able to express our love for each other; putting in little phrases and nuances that only we know adds a personal touch and also makes me and her smile. I recently made a custom-made love book expressing my love for Lianne and the things that make me love her every single day using a digital platform. With my work making me travel so much or sometimes even being away for long durations, digital communication lets us always be in touch and express our love for each other—but nothing beats a hug or kiss to express our love.”
Keeping connection alive
The rise of digital platforms has made it easier than ever for couples to stay connected, especially in long-distance relationships or busy schedules. Messaging apps like WhatsApp allow partners to instantly express their feelings, no matter where they are. Social media platforms serve as spaces to share inside jokes, love notes, and even future plans, while AI-driven tools can create uniquely crafted love messages and videos.
Dr. Aman Bhonsle, a psychotherapist and relationship counsellor at the Heart to Heart Counselling Centre in Mumbai, explains how these platforms are reshaping emotional connections between couples, “Emotional connection is the foundation of any relationship, and digital platforms like WhatsApp or AI-driven tools have reshaped how couples maintain that bond. In long-distance or busy relationships, these tools provide continuity—offering real-time communication, shared experiences, and emotional reassurance. While they can’t replace physical presence, they serve as vital bridges, helping partners express love, resolve conflicts, and sustain intimacy. The key is intentionality—using technology to enhance, rather than replace, meaningful connection and emotional attunement.”
Balancing technology with genuine emotional connection is key to sustaining a strong relationship.
Actor Arjun Bijlani reflects on how he and his wife, Neha Swami, embrace both modern and traditional ways of expressing love, “Technology has definitely changed the way we express love and stay connected. Neha and I use social media and messaging apps a lot—it’s all about sharing small moments, sending sweet messages, and making each other smile. Video calls are a blessing, especially when I’m busy with shoots, as they help us stay connected no matter where I am. I think digital platforms have made relationships both exciting and routine. They make communication easier and keep us close, but at the same time, nothing can replace the charm of handwritten letters, in-person surprises, and that personal touch. I haven’t received an AI-generated love note yet, but it would be interesting to see one! AI is advancing quickly and can create poetry or heartfelt messages, but for me, the real magic lies in personal emotions and effort. Social media is like a mini scrapbook where we save so many memories. What makes it even more special is how it reminds us of those moments—whether it’s a yearly or monthly memory popping up, it instantly takes you back and makes you relive those special times. I still appreciate the traditional ways of expressing love—like handwritten notes or spontaneous gestures. No matter how much technology evolves, real emotions and personal effort will always matter the most in a relationship.”
Different ways to express love
While many couples have embraced digital tools to enhance their relationships, others still prefer traditional expressions of love. Whether it’s handwritten letters, whispered sweet nothings, or passing messages through their children, some couples feel that technology has no place in their romance.
Actor Kunal Verma, shares how he and his wife, Puja Banerjee, keep their love old-school, “Our love and way of expressing is still very old-school, so we hardly have any clue about it. Puja is romantic, but I'm not at all, so technology will never be a part of our love relationship ever. We love the way we communicate with each other without using one. Making videos and reels—that’s all we can do when one has to express love on social platforms. And we still believe in the traditional way of expressing love, like sometimes passing our message through our son Krishiv to one another.”
Future of romance?
As technology continues to evolve, so do the ways in which couples celebrate their love. Virtual dates over Zoom or Facetime are becoming more common, especially for long-distance partners. AI-generated love notes and digital scrapbooks are helping couples create personalised memories that they can cherish forever. Some couples even use technology to plan grand surprises, from virtual scavenger hunts to AI-assisted marriage proposals.
Despite these digital advancements, one thing remains clear: love, in any form, is about connection and effort. Whether through an instant message or a handwritten note, what matters most is the intent behind the gesture. This Valentine’s Day, couples can choose how they want to celebrate—whether through a heartfelt text, an AI-generated video, or a simple hug that says it all.
