We live in a world where not just children, but even adults should be aware about self-defense. It is is not just a skill, but a necessity that allows us to protect ourselves in difficult situations. With the rise in crime and dangers around us, teaching children self-defense is more crucial then ever. And, training children from a young age can be particularly beneficial. It equips them with the confidence and ability to handle physical confrontations, especially in an age where bullying has become increasingly prevalent in schools.

One of the biggest advantages of self-defense training is that it teaches children how to respond to threats without necessarily resorting to violence. I feel self-defense is not about inflicting harm, but about learning how to defend oneself effectively. Children trained in self-defense develop an awareness of their surroundings and learn techniques to deter or escape from dangerous situations. This awareness is necessary in making quick, informed decisions in the face of dangerous situation.

As a parent, I personally recognize the value of self-defense for children. I enrolled my daughter, in a basic self-defense class when she was just eight years old. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, she was unable to continue her training, but I firmly believe that revisiting these classes would be beneficial for her even now as a teenager. The skills acquired in these classes are not just physical; they contribute significantly to mental strength and resilience.

Beyond protection, self-defense instills a strong sense of discipline and responsibility in children. Training in martial arts or self-defense teaches them to be accountable for their actions and fosters self-discipline — qualities that are valuable in all aspects of life. Challenges and obstacles are inevitable, but self-defense training helps children understand that setbacks are a part of life. They learn the importance of perseverance, resilience, and the ability to rise again after a fall, both metaphorically and literally.

Enrolling children in self-defense classes at a young age also helps build their confidence. Knowing that they have the skills to protect themselves boosts their self-esteem and gives them a sense of security. Additionally, these classes provide physical fitness benefits, improving their strength, flexibility, and coordination.

As a parent, I wholeheartedly endorse self-defense training for both boys and girls. It is a skill that not only ensures their safety but also contributes to their overall development. With the right training, children can grow into confident, disciplined, and resilient individuals ready to face the challenges of the real world. Investing in self-defense is investing in their future, equipping them with the tools they need to navigate life with strength and confidence.
