New Delhi: 'Haar ke jeetne wale ko Bazigar kehte hai,' says the dialogue from the iconic 90s movie 'Bazigar'. On Saturday, the electoral performance of Congress's Sandeep Dikshit, son of former Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit, is somewhat similar to the plot of the movie, where the main character of the movie played by Shah Rukh Khan lost a race with larger aim in mind, i.e. to take revenge of his father's death.
Sandeep Dikshit turned out be the real 'Baazigar' in the Delhi Assembly Elections 2025. Even though he could not win the New Delhi Assembly seat, but played a spoilsport for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal.
Kejriwal was defeated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Parvesh Verma by a margin of over 4,000 votes. Dikshit took 'badla (revenge)', of her mother's defeat in the 2013 Delhi polls. Notably, Sheila Dikshit lost to Kejriwal from the New Delhi seat in 2013 marking the end of the Congress's 15-year governance in the national capital territory.
Kejriwal was defeated by a margin of 4,089 votes, which is almost equal to the votes received by the Congress candidate. Sandeep Dikshit received 4,568 votes. If we look at the results of the New Delhi seat in 2013, Kejriwal defeated Sheila Dikshit with a margin of over 25,000 votes. The AAP chief had received 44,269 votes, while 18,405 votes were polled to Sheila Dikshit.
Kejriwal also retained the seat in 2015 and 2020.
In the 2025 polls, there was a neck-and-neck contest between BJP's Verma and the AAP chief. Verma received 30,088 votes and Kejriwal got 25,999.
Delhi Assembly Elections 2025 Results:
The BJP registered a thumping victory in the high-octane polls. The saffron party made a comeback in Delhi after 27 years. The BJP bagged 48 seats, while the Kejriwal-led party failed to repeat its 2015 and 2020 electoral performances and was restricted to only 22 seats. The Congress remained insignificant in the national capital territory as none of its candidates managed to win.
The BJP's entire election campaign was focussed on the alleged corruption during the AAP government's tenure of 10 years, including the liquor scam case and 'sheeshmahal'.
