Mumbai: In an unprecedented move, the the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will deploy emergency flood recovery vehicles to tackle water-logging during monsoon. According to reports, BMC is planning to procure four new emergency flood recovery vehicles costing around 9 crores. The procurement is expected to take place before the arrival of monsoon this year.
Every year water logging creates an issue in Mumbai so now BMC is set with these four machines, spots ranging for jetting machines, suction pumps and quick response machines for Mumbai.
Giving details about the procurement, a BMC official has told Indian Express that the advanced vehicles are being bought for the areas where flooding was witnessed during monsoon due to new infra projects.
"The purpose of the new vehicles that new vehicles are being bought is to help areas that, although not normally affected by water logging, have been seeing more frequent floods as a result of infrastructural improvements, heavy rainfall so now the emergency vehicle will help and solve the issue of water logging in Mumbai,'' Indian Express quoted BMC official as saying.
Where Are the Four New Vehicles Deployed?
The four new emergency vehicles will give service in the island city division, while the other will be used in the Eastern and Western suburbs. These machines will help to clear the water logging as fast as possible from the city and save from the heavy Mumbai rains.
In the video of budget 2025, shared on X by BMC they mentioned "The Equipments for Flood Mitigation Recycler Work order issued to supply 4 Emergency Flood Recovery Vehicles with submersible pumps and 4 Recycler Machines. Storm Water Pumping Stations, Portable Pumps, and Trash Booms are arranged at various locations.''
What Officials Said in the Report?
The emergency flood rescue vehicles, equipped with a pump and pipes would suck out water from flooded areas.
After receiving complaints, these vehicles could be promptly mobilised to the affected areas without delays.
The civic body officials are hopeful that the procurement of these new vehicles would be completed before June.
“Once we receive these vehicles, we will determine the strategic locations for the trucks to ensure that they can be driven to the flooded spots at the earliest,” the official told Express.“Since the island city faces heavy traffic, we will locate two vehicles in the city while one will be placed in the eastern suburbs and another at western suburbs,” said an official.
