The first Ladies Special trains were introduced in May 1992 on the Western Line and in July 1992 on the Central Line. Handicapped accommodation was added to local trains in March 1993.

In 2012, the first 15-car local began running from CSMT to Kalyan.
AC locals were introduced on the main line in 2020, and by 2025, their numbers have significantly increased.
