Indore (Madhya Pradesh): 10 days after Indore photographer Nitin Padiyar killed himself, police have registered a case against his wife, mother-in-law and two sisters-in-law for abetment of suicide, an official said on Thursday.

The 28-year-old event photographer, Nitin Padiyar, had hanged himself at his residence in the Banganga area on January 20 leaving a 14-page suicide note blaming his wife and in-laws for his death.

Additional DCP Ramsanehi Mishra said that the police have registered a case against Nitin’s wife Harsha Sharma, mother-in-law Sita Sharma, sister-in-laws Meenakshi and Varsha Sharma for abetting his suicide on the basis of the suicide note and family members’ statements. During investigation, it came to light that Nitin’s wife and in-laws mentally harassed him, leading him to take the drastic step.

The police are gathering information about the case filed by the deceased's wife in Rajasthan and also investigating the family’s allegations against Rajasthan police staff of bribery and assault. The police have registered a case against the accused under section 108 (abetment of suicide) of the BNS and they would soon be arrested, added additional DCP Mishra.

Wife filed divorce case, demanded maintenance and Rs 20L alimony

Nitin Padiyar had a love marriage with Harsha around five years ago. In 2023, she went to her maternal home in Rajasthan along with their toddler son. She filed a divorce case, allegedly demanding maintenance and Rs 20 lakh in alimony. The case is under trial and Nitin had to attend the court hearing. After being fed up with the ongoing harassment and stress caused by the divorce case, he took the drastic step.

Suicide note

In his suicide note, while blaming his wife and in-laws he wrote, “The reason for my death is my wife Harsha Sharma, mother-in-law Sita Sharma, sister-in-law Meenakshi and Varsha Sharma.” He also appealed to the central government to reform laws, claiming they were being misused by women and urged youth to marry only with legal agreements. Nitin’s family members alleged that she and her family were pressuring him for Rs 20 lakh as part of a settlement. According to the suicide note discovered, the pressure of paying this amount and the stress caused by it led to Nitin taking this extreme step.
