A video capturing a group of men in a car adorned with a DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) flag chasing a vehicle occupied by women has gone viral on social media. The incident, which reportedly took place on January 25 along Chennai’s East Coast Road, shows the men pursuing the women’s car.
In the footage, the women seem to be attempting to flee, but the men block their path. One of the men exits his vehicle and approaches the women’s car, appearing to bang on it as the women try to reverse to avoid the confrontation.
In another clip, the driver in which women were inside, can be seen talking to the youth. He can be heard saying, "It is okay, but we are not opening the door."
The video has sparked widespread outrage online, with many condemning the aggressive behavior. Opposition parties, including the AIADMK and BJP, shared the video on social media, criticising the ruling DMK.
The AIADMK posted the video on X, stating, “Footage shows drunk men in a car with a DMK flag attempting to stop women on ECR, seemingly with the intent to harm them physically or sexually. Does law enforcement or police even exist under Stalin’s government?”
AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan also commented, “Following the Anna University molestation incident, the entire state of Tamil Nadu has been questioning who is behind such acts. Yesterday’s incident provided the answer: it’s the DMK.”
He added, “The video of men in an SUV with a DMK flag chasing women in another car has sent shockwaves across the state. This highlights the deteriorating law and order situation in Tamil Nadu.”
The BJP Tamil Nadu unit remarked, “The four-year DMK regime’s achievement is that men in cars with black and red flags are now hunting women!” Both parties accused the police of inaction, alleging that officers questioned the women about why they were out at night when approached. However, the complainants have not yet confirmed whether the police responded insensitively or failed to assist them.
The AIADMK and BJP also raised concerns over the police’s silence, questioning whether an FIR had been filed and if the identities of the accused would be disclosed.
Reports suggest that the accused claimed the women’s car had collided with theirs and fled the scene. However, a 32-year-old woman, who filed a police complaint, denied that her vehicle had hit the men’s car.
Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and have launched a search for the suspects. The Chennai police have initiated an investigation into the incident, aiming to identify and apprehend those involved.
