Indore (Madhya Pradesh): A 44-year-old man got a new lease of life after he underwent a successful liver transplantation in Indore on Thursday. He got the liver of the 61-year-old accident victim.
The surgery was conducted at the city's Choithram Hospital on Thursday afternoon.
The vital organs of the 61-year-old Baliram Kushwah, who met an accident in Sagar and was shifted to Super Speciality Hospital, Jabalpur, were harvested after he was declared brain dead.
Kushwah’s heart was airlifted to Bhopal and was transplanted to a patient at AIIMS. Similarly, his liver was airlifted to Indore and was transported to Choithram Hospital through a green corridor on Thursday.
Dr. Anil Kuman Lakhwani, deputy director, Choithram Hospital, said, “The 44-year-old patient was suffering from chronic liver disease and was in regular follow-up with the doctors in the hospital. He had a liver failure and was registered for transplant.”
A team of doctors led by Dr. Ajay Jain performed the liver transplant.
Baliram Kushwaha, resident of Sagar, was admitted at Super Speciality Hospital NSCB in Jabalpur on January 22 with a severe head injury. He was declared brain dead at 01:30 PM Wednesday by a team of 4 doctors under THOA rules, 2014, and his second confirmatory medical examination, including an apnea test, brain stem death, was performed at 08:00 PM.
Kushwah’s grandson took the decision to donate his organs
Harinarayan Patel, grandson of the deceased Baliram Kushwaha, decided to donate vital organs of his grandfather. Earlier, kidneys and heart were allocated to Bhopal but kidneys couldn’t be donated due to some medical reasons. His liver was allocated to Indore.
