The Additional District and Sessions Court in Kolkata's Sealdah on Monday sentenced convict Sanjay Roy in the RG Kar rape and murder case to life imprisonment till death.
The court has also directed the state to pay the victim's family a sum of Rs 17 lakh as compensation.
Shortly after the court pronounced its judgment, advocate Rehman spoke to media and said, "Sanjay Roy has been sentenced to life imprisonment till death. A fine has also been imposed under 3 sections of BNS on the convict. The court directed the state to give compensation of Rs 17 lakh to the victim's family."
According to news agency ANI, the victim's family denied accepting the money, saying, "We don't want compensation, we want justice."
The parents of the victim spoke to an English news channel and demanded the death penalty for the accused, Sanjay Roy.
According to CNBC TV18, the victim's parents expressed their feelings before the verdict was announced, stating, “Whether it takes five months or five years, it doesn’t matter. We are living for justice. We have nothing left in our lives now. We hope Roy receives the death penalty. There was biological evidence indicating that Roy was present at the scene, but we don't believe he acted alone.”
The court, while pronouncing the verdict on the quantum of punishment, observed that it was not "the rarest of the rare" case.
Earlier in the day, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had pushed for the death sentence for Roy. However, in court, Roy opposed the death penalty. "I am being framed and have not committed any crime. I have not done anything and still, I have been held guilty," Roy told the court ahead of sentencing in the case, as reported by PTI.
