Mira Bhayandar: The crime detection unit attached to the Kashigaon police station arrested a 36-year-old Sri Lankan national for illegally intruding into the country sans valid documents.
According to the police, the accused who has been identified as-Arumahadi Janith Madhusangha D’silva (36) was caught from room number 306 of Hotel Western- lodging facility located adjacent to the highway in Kashimira during the All-Out combing operation on Tuesday night.
D'silva, who had faked his real identity, failed to produce any legitimate documents to validate his stay in India, following which he was taken into custody and booked under the relevant sections of the Foreigners Act, 1946, Passport Act, 1950 and Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.
“Investigations revealed that D’silva who was lodged in a jail in Sri Lanka for the past seven years on charges of murdering a local gangster in 2015 had fled the country after being granted bail in December, 2024.” said senior police inspector-Mahesh Togarwad.
The murder is said to be an act of revenge to settle scores with the gangster who had allegedly murdered members of D’silva’s family in Sri Lanka. Fearing retaliation from the associates of the deceased gangster, D’silva took the sea route from the island country and landed at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu on 31, December, 2024 before moving to Thane district.
He had given a fake Aadhar card identifying himself as Dinesh Kumar Iyer to book a room at the lodge. “The person who helped him obtain the fake Aadhar card and sim card is also on our radar and will be arrested soon.” said a police official.
Meanwhile D’silva was remanded to custody after he was produced before the district sessions court, Thane on Thursday. Police sub inspector- Sachin Shendge who is attached to the anti-terrorist squad (ATS) of the Kashigaon police station is conducting further investigations into the case.
