Mumbai: Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) witnessed the highest-ever passenger traffic with approximately 54.8 million passengers over the year 2024, recording a growth of 6.3% compared to previous year. While Delhi remained the top domestic destination from passengers flying from Mumbai, Dubai topped the list of international destinations.
One of the top airports in the country, CSMIA observed passenger traffic of 54.8 million in 2024, which was the highest ever recorded in its history. The figures marked a growth of 6.3% compared to 2023 and 19.41% compared to pre-pandemic year 2019. Mumbai Airport also recorded 3.46 lakh air traffic movements (ATMs), marking a 3.2% increase over the previous year.
The airport recorded its highest single-day passenger movement on December 21, serving approximately 1.70 lakh passengers, including 1.16 lakh domestic and 52,800 international travellers. December also emerged as the busiest month, with 5.05 million passengers, showcasing a 3.4% growth over December 2023. Additionally, the airport achieved a milestone with over 8,000 international ATMs in December, further strengthening its position as a global travel hub.
February 3 and 10 saw CSMIA handle its highest-ever single-day ATMs for the year 2024, with 962 movements on both days, reflecting its operational efficiency and adaptability to surging demand. The year also saw peak passenger movement during holiday seasons, demonstrating the Airport’s ability to handle high-demand periods seamlessly.
As Mumbai-Delhi route is one of the busiest air routes across the world, Delhi remained the top domestic destination from Mumbai Airport with 18% of market share. Similarly, Bengaluru and Goa recorded 11% and 7% of market share respectively.
On the other hand, Dubai topped the list of international travel destinations with 16% market share, followed by London and Abu Dhabi each at 7%. The Middle East region remained the most preferred region for passenger travel with 48.8% of traffic, followed by Asia-Pacific at 28.2% and Europe at 14.5%.
In 2024, CSMIA continued to enhance its network, introducing international routes to Tashkent and Almaty and domestic destinations like Deoghar, Rajahmundry, Tirupati, Ayodhya, and Vijayawada. The airport also welcomed prominent carriers, including Nok Air, Thai Viet Jet, Salam Air, Uzbekistan Airways, and Air Astana, further cementing its status as a preferred gateway for global travel.
