Navi Mumbai: Since the new year started, Navi Mumbai has been hit by a number of accidents in various parts of the city. In the past 14 days, there have been 33 small and major accidents, and 14 people have lost their lives in these accidents.

Additionally, 26 people have been seriously and mildly injured. These accidents have took lives of at least five youngsters including two student of Apeejay School of Hospitality, one student of SIES College and two young BPO professionals.

On the very first day of the new year, five accidents were reported at CBD Belapur, Panvel, Uran, Nhavasheva, and Kamothe. In these accidents, three people died, and two were injured.

On January 3, a woman was killed in an accident while crossing the road at Vashi on the Palm Beach road by an unidentified vehicle. On January 5, a speeding dumper heading from Panvel to Mumbai collided with four vehicles in on the Sion-Panvel road at Juinagar, resulting in death of a biker.

On January 6, one person died in an accident in the Khandeshwar area. Following that, on January 7, two college students, who were traveling to their college- Apeejay schoole of hospitality at Belapur- on a two wheeler, were run over by a bus on the Sion-Panvel road. The accident had reportedly happened due to the uneven road at the edge of the highway. Both the students died in the accident.

On January 9, a person died in an accident in the Nhava Sheva area, and on January 10, in the evening, an accident involving three students from the TY Bcom of SIES college in Nerul was reported. The students were on a two wheeler as triple seat. The two wheeler collided with a dumper on Jasai Bridge at Uran, killing the rider after two days of treatment.

On January 11, an unidentified person died in an accident in the Khandeshwar police station jurisdiction. On the morning of January 12, two young women were tragically killed when a speeding Skoda car at Kopri on Palm Beach road after the car collided with the scooter coming from the opposite direction. On Tuesday, one man was killed and a lady was seriously injured after a speeding car dashed the two pedestrians.

“We have been conducting awareness on safe driving and have been regularly penalising the rash drivers. The cctvs too have been capturing the offenders and penalising them with an e challan. When on road, one should always remember that not just their but also other’s life is at risk and following all the traffic norms and being a cautious driver, is very important,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) Tirupati Kakade said.
