The Maharashtra Cyber Department, the state’s nodal agency for cybercrime and security, recently intervened in two alarming incidents of cyber harassment and blackmail involving loan applications in Pune district. Swift action by cyber analysts and local police saved two victims from attempting suicide in separate cases.
Case 1: Blackmail After Loan Repayment
A 22-year-old man from Pune borrowed ₹2,800 through a loan app and repaid the amount promptly. However, he continued to face extortion calls demanding additional payments. When he refused, the perpetrators escalated the harassment by sharing explicit, morphed images of a female relative with his family via WhatsApp.
Feeling helpless and overwhelmed, the victim called the Maharashtra Cyber Helpline (14407) and expressed suicidal thoughts. Cyber analysts immediately alerted the local police station, enabling swift intervention that ensured the victim's safety.
Case 2: Threats Over Loan Default
In a separate incident, a 35-year-old man borrowed ₹5,060 for medical expenses, agreeing to a monthly EMI of ₹1,700. Despite the agreed terms, the loan app doubled the repayment demand. When the victim refused to comply, the fraudsters threatened to circulate explicit photos.
Distressed by the threats, the victim contacted the cyber helpline, disclosing his suicidal intentions. The department flagged the case as "severe blackmailing" and quickly alerted the police station and control room. The timely response ensured the victim received protection and support.
