The recent case of a female business process outsourcing (BPO) employee's murder by her male colleague with a koyta (machete) in the parking lot of their workplace in Pune's Yerawada has sparked concerns about women's safety in the city. This incident isn't an isolated case. There have been a series of alarming incidents recently, ranging from murders and gangrapes to sexual assault and robbery. This has left Punekars questioning the efficacy of law enforcement and safety measures.

Speaking to The Free Press Journal, many female professionals expressed concerns and emphasised the need for stricter action by the police and administration.

Diya Sawant, an employee in the corporate sector at Viman Nagar, said, "Pune's IT sector is thriving, and while safety concerns for women are taken seriously in most companies, constant vigilance is still necessary. It is important that both companies and individuals actively participate in creating safer and more inclusive spaces where women like us can work professionally without facing unnecessary challenges or without any fear."

Neeta Khadke, a resident at Raviwar Peth, expressed, "After hearing about the sexual abuse cases in the school premises and school vehicles, we are worried about sending our children to the school. If such incidents are happening in reputed institutions in the presence of CCTV cameras and security guards, where are we supposed to feel safe?"

Monica Kudu, a social worker, highlighted, "Day by day, the cases of crime against women are increasing. Reading through social media, a sense of terror has been installed in the residents' minds. Recent cases show that women are not safe anywhere - not in schools, gardens, tekdis, etc. Police patrolling should be increased in such places."

Ragini More, an advocate by profession, pointed out, "Many cases of sextortion don't come to light due to fears of defamation. There are several cases of voyeurism, fake matrimonial scams and child abuse pending in the court." Speaking about sexual harassment at the workplace, More added, "In many cases, it has been seen that women are forced to endure mental trauma due to sexual favours sought by the seniors or colleagues at the workplace. These issues lead to increased crime cases against women." Talking about the murder cases, More said, "Love triangles and lack of trust are major causes of murders involving women. The police need to take some strong steps to create fear among the criminals and ensure that the thought of punishment deters them from committing such crimes."
