Indore (Madhya Pradesh): A newly married woman from Indore has filed a case of dowry harassment against her husband and five members of his family on Friday.
She claimed that her wedding cost 1.1 crore INR, but her in-laws are demanding an additional 50 lakh INR as dowry.
They also allegedly kept the money meant for her visa to Australia.
The case was registered by the Tilak Nagar police on the complaint of Prabhuti Mittal, against her husband Ritum Mittal from Ahmedabad, her mother-in-law Vidula Mittal, father-in-law Mahesh Mittal, sister-in-law Chashu Mittal, and brother-in-law Sanchit Arya.
Prabhuti stated that her engagement took place in April 2023 at the Koun Palace Hotel, where her father spent around 2.5 lakh INR.
Her wedding took place in February 2024 at Sampat Palace, costing 1.1 crore INR.
Her father gave gold jewelry, including three sets of gold necklaces, three gold coins, three sets of gold earrings, a diamond bracelet, and diamond earrings.
Her grandmother gifted 330 grams of gold to her father-in-law. She also gave her husband gold coins, a gold watch, a chain, a ring, and 12.9 lakh INR in cash.
Before the wedding, it was agreed that Prabhuti would be sent to Australia on a spouse and visitor visa, for which her father-in-law had signed the documents.
However, after the wedding, her mother-in-law and sister-in-law criticised her family for the amount of gold given and said her family didn’t understand how to handle transactions.
When Prabhuti told her mother-in-law that the gold she gave was more than their demand, the mother-in-law claimed she would handle the household chores herself.
When Prabhuti spoke to her husband about this, he said that he had to follow his parents' wishes.
