Kumbh Mela's origins lie in the Samudra manthan, where poison and celestial beings emerged. When Amrit appeared, it was denied to the Asuras. Lord Vishnu, as Mohini, took the Amrit in a pot (Kumbh) to protect it.
A few drops of the Amrit is said to have spilled in 4 places which later became the 4 holy cities of Haridwar, Prayagraj, Ujjain, and Kashi.
While the world will witness a Maha Kumbh in 2025, this isn’t the only type of Kumbh Mela. There are four types of Kumbh mela - The Maha Kumbh, the Ardh Kumbh, the Purna Kumbha, and the Magh mela. But What is the difference? lets find out.
Maha Kumbh: This is the largest and most sacred of all Kumbh Melas, occurring once every 144 years at Prayagraj (Allahabad).
Purna Kumbh: This occurs every 12 years at one of the four holy cities: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik, or Ujjain.
Ardh Kumbh: This takes place every six years at either Prayagraj or Haridwar.
Magh Mela: This is a smaller annual event held in Prayagraj during the Hindu month of Magh (January-February).
