Mumbai: The Powai police have registered a case against an individual identified as Ijaz for allegedly assaulting a BEST bus driver. The accused, who was a pillion rider, managed to escape after the incident. On Sunday, the 49-year-old BEST bus driver, Vikas Tamare, was attacked with a bat. The attacker fled the scene after the driver alerted the police control room.
According to the police, the incident occurred on Sunday at 4.10 PM while the BEST bus was en route from Gorai to Mulund. As the bus approached the Bharat Scout Guide Training Centre at Filter Pada in Powai, the biker and pillion rider became agitated because the bus was blocking their passage. The biker had been continuously honking to get ahead.
The pillion rider, identified as Ijaz, entered the bus, hurled abuses at the driver, and assaulted him with a bat. He fled the scene when the driver called the police helpline 100 for assistance.
The police are actively searching for Ijaz, who assaulted the driver, and are reviewing CCTV footage to track his whereabouts. While onlookers managed to detain the motorcyclist, the pillion rider escaped before the police arrived.
The Powai police have filed a case under sections 121(1) (voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant), 132 (assaulting or using criminal force against a public servant while discharging their duties), and 352 (breach of peace) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita on December 21.
