Thane: The Bazarpeth police booked a 45-year-old man for allegedly pronouncing triple talaq (instant divorce) to his 28-year-old wife in Kalyan on December 20. The incident took place in Kalyan from December 7 to December 20. The accused works in a private company.

The police said that the accused sought Rs 15 lakh from his wife as he was about to give it to his first wife. He allegedly threatened her not to come home if the money was not provided to him. He allegedly assaulted her and threatened to kill her if the demand was not fulfilled.

On December 5, the victim reached the home, and there was an escalation of a heated argument between them, which later turned into an assault on her. As a result, he allegedly gave her triple talaq which was banned in 2019, to his wife and forcefully expelled her from the home.

Therefore, she approached the Sambhaji Nagar police station on December 19 and transferred her case to the Bazarpeth police station on December 20.

Senior Police Inspector Sureshsing Gaud from Bazarpeth police said, "The complainant got married to the accused in January 2024. The accused wanted to give talaq to his first wife to live with the complainant peacefully. However, he demanded Rs 15 lakh from the complainant to give to his first wife for the divorce." He further stated that the accused allegedly told the complainant to come to a boss party and sleep with him.

A case was registered under section of 115(2), 351(2), 351(3), 352 of Bharitya Nyay Sanhita and relevant section of Muslim women protection of Marriage act.
