As we approach Christmas 2024, many are looking forward to celebrating the holiday in the spiritual heart of India, Varanasi. The city, known for its rich culture and spiritual significance, is also home to some of the oldest and most historic churches in North India. Among them, the 'English Church' or St. Mary’s Church holds a special place in history, not only as Kashi's first Protestant church but also reportedly as a site where Queen Elizabeth II herself prayed during her visit to the city in 1961.

Know more about St. Mary’s Church

St. Mary’s Church, located in the cantonment area of Varanasi, is believed to be the oldest Protestant church in the city and one of the oldest in North India. Built in the early 19th century, its foundation was laid by Daniel Corey on April 29, 1810, and the church was completed in 1812. The church, also known as the Anglican Church or Garrison Church, was initially a place of worship for the British soldiers stationed in the cantonment. The church is named ‘English Church’ due to the tradition of English-speaking worship services.

The church features a beautiful carved floor, and its benches were designed to accommodate the soldiers' guns, reflecting the military history of the area. Its stunning Peacock carpet adds to the church’s charm. Over time, St. Mary’s Church became an important religious centre for the Christian community in Varanasi, especially under the guidance of Bishop Patrick D’Souza, who made significant efforts to enhance its grandeur.
