The "Application-based Survey 2024" was issued by the study abroad platform LeapScholar. According to the report, Indian students are defying expectations in order to fulfil their desire to study overseas.

State board students and women lead in pursuing global higher education

A survey indicates that students from local State Boards are just as excited about pursuing global education as their counterparts from international/ICSE and CBSE boards, despite the common misconception that these students are exposed to and have dreams for studying overseas. This suggests that a wider range of people should be included, with expectations for studying abroad extending beyond traditional origins and nationalities. Moreover, the fact that women make up a sizable share of this trend (34%) emphasises how Indian women are shattering preconceptions and setting the standard for international education.

Arnav Kumar, Co-founder said, “The survey is a sign that Indian students are becoming more ambitious and forward-thinking in their approach to look for what is best for them. We feel inspired by the growing aspirations of the Indian students, particularly those from State Boards, who are now considering and embracing studying abroad like never before. We also feel very good to see female students leading the charge. This shift not only reflects the increasing accessibility of studying abroad but also the changing mindset of Indian students, who are now more open to exploring unconventional ways of learning.”

Indian students pursue diverse academic fields beyond STEM

The study also shows a change in the subjects and destinations that respondents are most interested in. While the US, Canada, and the UK continue to be the most popular travel destinations, more and more Indian students are exploring alternative options, such as Japan and the Netherlands. The report also reveals that, despite their continued popularity, STEM programs are no longer the main attraction for overseas students. A more varied and well-rounded educational experience is what students are seeking, as seen by their exploration of a wide range of disciplines such as Psychology, Law, Sport Sciences, Architecture, Building and Planning, Performing Arts, and Social Sciences.
