MOKOKCHUNG — In an MDFA Trophy 2024 quarterfinal encounter, Team Gilgat edged past Zonipang SC with a 2-1 victory, securing their place in the semifinals. The match, played at Imkongmeren Sports Complex, Mokokchung, on Tuesday, began with both teams showing equal determination, but it was Gilgat who managed to take an early lead. Pangei Konyak found the back of the net in the 18th minute, putting Gilgat in the driver’s seat. Zonipang, on the other hand, struggled to break down Gilgat’s defence throughout the first half, with both teams battling for control of midfield. In the dying moments of stoppage time, Pangei Konyak once again scored a crucial second goal in the 90+5th minute. Moments later, Zonipang’s Maochang pulled one back with a stunning strike in the 90+6th minute. Despite Zonipang’s late resurgence, time ran out, and Gilgat held on to claim victory. The quarterfinal also saw a physical contest between the two sides, with six yellow cards being shown—the highest number in the tournament so far.
