DIMAPUR — An awareness talk on “Harmful effects of tobacco on health” was organised at ICFAI University Nagaland, Chümoukedima, on Monday. The talk was given by Dr. N Moa Jamir, senior surgeon (dental), and Imkumla Aier, psychologist, both from the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP), Dimapur, stated a press release. Dr. Moa, speaking on the occasion, discussed how tobacco has assumed different forms over the years, from smoking to smokeless tobacco, and the dangers it poses to health, as well as its psychological, social, and economic impacts. Aier, in her address, highlighted that smoking is the major cause of cancer in both men and women and stressed the dangers of passive smoking, the problems it causes in the reproductive organs of both males and females, and the environmental implications. The resource persons also presented on the effects of tobacco use. The programme ended with all attendees taking a pledge to say no to tobacco. Dr. Kevizonuo Kuolie, associate dean, concluded the programme with words of gratitude and challenged the student community to live a tobacco-free life.
