The Supreme Court on Monday disposed of the plea seeking a fresh CBI investigation filed by the parents of the victim in the rape-murder case at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata. The plea was rejected by a bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, who observed that the applicants could pursue the matter before the Calcutta High Court. Senior Advocate Karuna Nundi represented the victim's parents in the case, while Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta appeared on behalf of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The top court was taking suo moto cognisance of the case related to the horrific rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor who was raped and killed in a government medical college and hosptial in August of 2024. In February, a special court in Kolkata directed the CBI to submit a fresh progress report by February 24 regarding its investigation into the case.The CBI took over the investigation after a directive from the Calcutta High Court. On October 7, the agency filed a charge sheet in the trial court, and charges were framed against civic volunteer Sanjay Roy on November 4. The trial court sentenced Roy to life imprisonment on January 20. However, the victim's parents have stated that they do not seek the death penalty for Roy.
