A parliamentary panel was informed on Monday that while the US has not officially made any announcement regarding tariffs on India, key negotiations were taking place on this count. India has sought time till September before taking any concrete decision on tariffs, sources have said.Officials said New Delhi has been pushing the 'infant industry argument' for furthering India's case in these negotiations, sources noted. 'Infant industry' is the economic rationale used for the protection of nascent industries which do not have the economies of scale that their older competitors from other countries may have, and thus need to be protected until they can attain similar economies of scale.Commerce secretary Sunil Barthwal, along with other officials, briefed the parliamentary panel on external affairs, chaired by Shashi Tharoor. At the briefing, it was informed that while the US has imposed tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China, no official announcement has been made on India so far. This, they reason, is because India's case is different from Canada and Mexico as both these countries border the US, sources said. It was also underlined that while the US has imposed tariffs on China, India's case is different, due to geopolitical reasons, sources added.Government officials were in talks for a mutually beneficial pact for both the countries, officials told the panel. India has sought time till fall (September) before a final deal is struck, sources added. It was also conveyed to the members that India may consider reducing tariffs on a bilateral basis but not on a multilateral basis to protect domestic players.Sources said India may consider reducing tariffs on its end, like in the case of nuts, but may protect the duties in the dairy sector.
