Runcorn MP Mike Amesbury will appear in court today after being charged with assault following an incident last year.Mr Amesbury, who represents the Runcorn and Helsby constituency, was involved in an altercation with a 45-year-old man in Frodsham in Cheshire in the early hours of October 26. In November he was charged with common assault by Cheshire Police.The Member of Parliament is due to appear at Chester Magistrates Court this morning. Mr Amesbury was suspended by the Labour Party after footage of the October incident emerged. Until his suspension he had served as a Labour MP since 2017. He was also a shadow minister between 2018 and 2024.In a statement released last year, Mr Amesbury previously said he would “co-operate with any inquiries”, but was “determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community."Follow our live coverage for all the updates from court today.
