The Portage Terriers delighted their home crowd with a 5-2 victory over the Waywayseecappo Wolverines in their annual Teddy Bear Toss game Friday night at Stride Place. The festive tradition saw over 350 stuffed animals rain down onto the ice just 53 seconds into the first period when Koy Funk opened the scoring for Portage. The plush toys were collected by Terriers players and Central Plains Capitals U-13 skaters and will be donated to local children in need. The Wolverines briefly tied the game at 5:39 of the first on a shorthanded goal by Aidan Herring, but the Terriers responded in the second with William McKay and Parker Scherr each finding the back of the net. Scherr’s goal, assisted by McKay and Wyatt Dreger, came on the power play and gave Portage a 3-2 lead heading into the final frame. Third-period goals from Owen Witt and Scott Cousins sealed the win for the Terriers. Cameron Bullinger contributed two assists, bringing his season total to 22. Goaltender Mitchell Kathler made 27 saves for Portage, improving his record to 12-4 on the season with a 1.99 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage. The Terriers head to Waywayseecappo on Saturday night for a rematch with the Wolverines.
